This app contains a translation of the ancient Egyptian Bentresh Stele (or Bakhtan Stele). Set during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II (or Ramesses the Great), although probably written much later, the hieroglyphic text tells the story of Ramses' sister-in-law, Bentresh (or Bint-Rashit), daughter of the Prince of Bakhtan (i.e. Bactria, modern-day Afghanistan), who falls ill and suffers from demonic possession. The Prince of Bakhtan sends a messenger asking Ramses for help. The Princess is eventually healed and delivered from demons by the God Khonsu after the Pharaoh implores Him for assistance. One may find the narrative slightly reminiscent of the episodes in which Jesus Christ healed the demoniacs in the New Testament Gospels. The Bentresh Stele is made of black sandstone and was found in 1829 in a small Ptolemaic shrine that stood next to the Khonsu temple of Ramesses III in Karnak. It is now in the Louvre (Louvre C 284), and depicts Ramses II giving incense offerings to Khonsu of Thebes. The text is translated here into English from the original ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics by A. H. Sayce (1890) and includes the translator's original footnotes.
Who was Khonsu?
Khonsu was an ancient Egyptian God of the Moon, healing, fertility, and protection. At Thebes, He formed part of a family triad or Trinity (the "Theban Triad") with Mut as His mother and Amun as His father. He was also identified with the Moon God Iah (or Yah, Jah) who may have a syncretic identity with the Hebrew God, Yahweh.
